Helping missionary parishes to form missionary disciples

The work of forming Christian disciples and evangelisation is at the very heart of the mission of the Archdiocese of Southwark. Our Archbishop, John Wilson, calls us to be an ‘Evangelising and Missionary Archdiocese’, and it is the work of the Agency for Evangelisation and Catechesis to focus towards this end.

The main goal of the Agency is to support the parishes of the Archdiocese of Southwark in terms of Evangelisation, Catechesis and Formation and to encourage the development and formation of lay people in the diocese.

We are well aware that a tremendous amount of good work, in these three areas, is already being undertaken. The role of the Agency, therefore, is to celebrate and share what is working, and to assist parishes in their mission and to greater fruitfulness.

Evangelisation

At the core of evangelisation is “the proclamation of Christ and his Gospel by word and the testimony of life,” which invites conversion, evidenced through faith in Christ, repentance, and full communion with the Catholic Church.

Catechesis

Since the early Church, the term “catechesis” has been used to describe all the Church’s efforts to help people to believe that Jesus Christ is the Son of God, and to educate and instruct them in how to live a Christian life.

Formation

Formation is an answer to the call to growth and a continual process in the maturation of faith, of always bearing much fruit. Every single Christian is charged with a gradual and lifelong process in which we are ever-growing in spiritual and dogmatic formation.

How often we are tempted to keep close to the shore! Yet the Lord calls us to put out into the deep and let down our nets (Lk 5:4). He bids us spend our lives in his service. Clinging to him, we are inspired to put all our charisms at the service of others. May we always feel compelled by his love (2 Cor 5:14) and say with St Paul: ‘Woe to me if I do not preach the Gospel’ (1 Cor 9:16).
