In Southwark we have developed “Discovering
Priesthood Days” as a chance for those under 18 to
learn more about the life and work of a priest and
to meet others who have faced the question of a
vocation to the priesthood.
The days are held in different parts of the diocese
and we are always very grateful to our hosts. In
September we enjoyed the hospitality of Bishop John
at the Hermitage in West Malling where we relaxed in
his common room and skilfully avoided the rabbit
holes in the garden.

On Saturday 3rd November a Discovering
Priesthood Day was held at St John’s Seminary,
Wonersh. It was a fantastic day which included tours
of the building, lively discussion and, of course,
football on the college pitch. The seminary made us
feel very welcome and the Rector told the
participants he hoped some of them would be students
there one day. The seminarians went out of their way
to make us feel welcome and readily answered
questions and shared their vocation stories.
Afterwards I asked many of those who came whether
they would be more or less likely to consider the
priesthood after the day. They all said they were
much more likely to apply.
