On the Feast of St Thomas, Apostle, the Syro-Malabar Catholic community packed St George's Cathedral. They were welcomed by Archbishop Kevin. Mass was concelebrated in the Syro-Malabar Rite, followed by a cultural programme and refreshments in the Amigo Hall.

The Syro-Malabar community traces its origins to the preaching of St Thomas, Apostle, who, according to tradition, landed on the Malabar coast of southwest India in 52AD. They are also known as St Thomas Christians. They have always been in communion with the Apostolic See of Rome. In the fourth century the Church came into contact with the Syro-Chaldean Church and adopted its traditions and liturgy.
Mass in the Syro-Malabar Rite is regularly offered in the Southwark diocese in eight parishes and occasionally in some other parishes.
