From an early 9th century manuscript version of Saint Paul's letters ascribed to the Monastery of St. Gallen.  It is believed to be one of the earliest depictions of Saint Paul in European art. The inscription says: "S(AN)C(TU)S PAULUS" and "sedet hic scripsit"
("he sits here and writes").
