ARCHIEPISCOPUS SOUTHVARCENSIS
PLENARY INDULGENCE
FOR THE 2000th ANNIVERSARY
OF THE BIRTH OF SAINT PAUL THE APOSTLE
On
the occasion of the 2000th Anniversary of the birth of
Saint Paul the Apostle, Pope Benedict XVI has granted
the gift of special graces for the sanctification and
eternal salvation of the faithful. A Plenary Indulgence
may be obtained by those who devoutly make a pilgrimage
to the Basilica of St. Paul in Rome. The Holy Father has
asked that this gift is shared also by those who may not
be able to make this pilgrimage in the local churches
throughout the world.
I
hereby decree that in the Diocese of Southwark
a Plenary Indulgence may be obtained in every Church and
Chapel in the Diocese
by those who attend Mass or other Solemn Prayers in
honour of Saint Paul
on the Vigil and Feast of the Conversion of St. Paul,
24th and 25th January 2009
and on the Vigil and Solemnity of Ss. Peter and Paul on
28th and 29th June 2009.
His
Holiness, Pope Benedict has further granted the same
Plenary Indulgence to those who, through illness or some
other serious cause, are not able to attend the Liturgy
of the Church when they spiritually join in the Jubilee
celebration, offering their prayers and sufferings to
God.
The
Plenary Indulgence may be received by those who are
truly detached and repentant of sin, purified by the
Sacrament of Penance, restored by Holy Communion and
pray for the intention of the Holy Father, the Pope.
The
indulgence may be obtained for the benefit of the
faithful themselves and for the deceased as many times
as they fulfil the condition of the decree but only one
indulgence may be received on any one day.
