The Cathedral's Paschal Candle

Candle rich in scriptural and iconographic symbolism

Archbishop Kevin receives the Paschal Candle from the artist Maurizia Lees and her husband Lorenzo Lees

The symbolism of the candle

The design of the candle is based on Isaiah 37:16: God enthroned on the cherubim. There are many winged cherubim on the candle.

Psalm 93: "The Lord is king, with majesty enrobed; the Lord has robed himself with might, he has girded himself with power."

Christ is dressed in red, in iconography the symbol of the divine nature; his blue cloak expresses his humanity - blue is the symbol of human nature.

There are four triangles with symbols of the evangelists.

The background is dark. According to Psalm 18:9-12: "He lowered the heavens and came down, a black cloud under his feet."
