St George’s Cathedral Choirs led a beautiful Carol Service, with carols including O Come, O Come Emmanuel, In the Bleak Midwinter and Domi Jesu.

The combined Cathedral Choirs were joined by children from the Southwark Singing Programme. To delight of those in attendance, the children beautifully sang Away in a Manager and See him lying on a bed of straw.

In his reflection, Archbishop John said:

“God is with us. The Lord is Emmanuel: God with us and God for us.

“But what does it mean to have this faith, that God is with us – all of us? It means for me to believe that fundamentally, I am never, ever alone. That God’s searching, merciful love finds us even when we walk away or when we feel lost.

“The most important consequence of the birth of Jesus Christ is this: that we have a Saviour. That we have someone who can rescue us from what we cannot save ourselves from: sin, and death.

“A Saviour has been born for us and therefore we should never be afraid”.

At the end of the Carol Service, Archbishop John thanked the Archdiocesan Director of Music, Jonathan Schranz, Cathedral Organist Alex Flower, the Choral Directors and Lay Clerks “who perform so beautifully for us and lead us in worship”.

The Archbishop also thanked the young people in the Southwark Singing Programme who sang wonderfully at the Carol Service.

Young people in attendance were then invited by the Archbishop to join him on the sanctuary and asked what Christmas meant for them. The answers were beautiful, with one young girl saying “Christmas is not about presents and decorations, but spending time with God”, a young boy said “Christmas is not about the presents and stuff we get, it’s about loving Jesus”.
