Caritas Southwark was launched on Saturday 18th March 2023 at an Inaugural Mass at St George's Cathedral, Southwark. Archbishop John Wilson has invited Canon Victor Darlington, Episcopal Vicar for the South-East and Director of the Racial Justice and Cultural Inclusion Commission, to lead Caritas Southwark. The launch comes following a year of research and enquiry among parishioners, clergy and existing charities

Speaking of the launch of Caritas Southwark, Canon Victor said:

"I give thanks to God and to every member of my team for their hard work, support andCaritas Southwark Team contributions  towards the realisation of this day. This is a dream come true, we all have worked hard and  waited for this day, and it has finally come after a year of team work and consultation.

Caritas Southwark marks the dawn of a new era, which beckons us all to see the face of our dear Lord in so many of our brothers and sisters in need. Their cry and their pain is an invitation to us, through Caritas Southwark, to stand out boldly for them and with them, and like Veronica- who defied the hostility of the Jewish leaders, by boldly reaching out to wipe the face of Jesus on the way of the Cross, we too can do this in our world today to our brothers and sisters who are suffering. Caritas Southwark affords every one of us a  unique opportunity to put our faith into action, like the Good Samaritan and like Simon of Cyrene.

I want to particularly thank Archbishop John Wilson for inspiring this great initiative, which is long overdue for our Archdiocese. His pastoral leadership and care for all, especially for the poor and suffering, is what has made Caritas Southwark a dream come true. Today we give thanks as we look forward to making Caritas Southwark our collective and individual way of living our faith, backed up with loving and merciful actions of good works."
