With Bernadette we make the
Sign of the Cross
| "I raised my eyes and looked
towards the grotto. I saw a lady dressed in white:
she had a white robe, a white veil, a blue belt and
a yellow rose on each of her feet. I thought I was
mistaken, I rubbed my eyes, I looked again and still
saw the same lady. Then I put my hand in my pocket
to take out my rosary. I wanted to make the sign of
the cross, I couldn't, my hand fell. Then I became
afraid, but I could not do it. The vision made the
sign of the cross. I tried to make it myself and
then I could. As soon as I had made it, I became
calm. I said my rosary, having the lady in front of
me the whole time." |
The Sisters of Charity of
the Convent of Nevers describe how Bernadette made
the Sign of the Cross:
"In taking holy
water and giving it to the sick while making the
Sign of the Cross, which she did slowly and
reverently, she edified all who saw her."
"The way in which Bernadette made the Sign of the
Cross indicated that she was full of the spirit of
faith; she couldn't stand to see others make it
poorly."
"One day when one of the sisters
made it very negligently, she asked the sister if
she had hurt her arm or was she in a hurry."
"Bernadette
made the Sign of the Cross very well, not afraid to
touch both her shoulders as she had been told to by
the Blessed Virgin."
"How many times I was
surprised in making the Sign of the Cross with her
because I found I made it so well."
"I
noticed the way in which Sr Mary Bernard made the
Sign of the Cross. It was large and made slowly and
with respect." |
In the Sign of the Cross all
the misery of the world which rests on us is
transformed in deliverance and salvation. |

"The Sign of the Cross is a fundamental gesture of
Christian prayer. To make the Sign of the Cross is a
way of saying a visible and public "yes" to Him who
died for us and is risen, to God who in the humility
and vulnerability of His love is all-powerful,
stronger than all the power and intelligence of the
world."
