Bequests

Why leave a legacy?

A legacy could be the most far-reaching gift you ever make.

Writing a will allows you to provide for the people and causes close to your heart. Alongside family and friends, many people choose to remember charities that have helped them in difficult times, or that they trust to protect their values.

Whatever your chosen cause, you can be sure your legacy will provide help, hope and opportunities to future generations. Remembering a charity in your will needn’t cost you a penny during your lifetime and it can help to reduce the taxable value of your estate. So as well as being a powerful force for good in the future, a legacy is also a very practical way to support your favourite cause.

WORDING FOR A BEQUEST

A bequest formula should be prepared in a proper manner to avoid future legal complications. The following pro-formula should be used:

“I give……………………………………………… to the person who shall at my death be the Roman Catholic Bishop exercising jurisdiction over Roman Catholics resident in the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark, or if there shall then be no such person then to the person who shall at my death be exercising ecclesiastical jurisdiction over such Roman Catholics as Diocesan Administrator in accordance with the rules and regulations of the Roman Catholic Church to be applied by him for or towards such lawful charitable purposes as he shall in his absolute discretion think proper in connection with the Parish of …………………………………………………………
“I declare that the receipt of the Financial Secretary of the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Southwark at the time of my death shall be a full discharge to the executors of my will in respect of same”

Notes:
  • the first space is for indicating what bequest is being made.
  • the second space is to indicate a specific parish to which a bequest is being made.
  • if a bequest is intended for the diocese rather than a specific parish then the text in red should be omitted.
  • If the pro-forma provided is not thought to be suitable for whatever reason, please contact the Diocesan Finance Office.
